Course Design

To demonstrate our understanding of Moodle course design, we have included 2 courses that our team have created - Grade 10 English (ENG2D) and Grade 5 English as an Additional Language (EAL).

When designing courses for clients, the Everon team follows the AGILE instructional design approach and adheres to mobile-first principles

To ensure maximum user accessibility, courses are designed adhering to UDL principles and then verified for equal access using the Brickfield Accessibility Toolkit (tool_brickfield). This is evidenced in the ENG2D accessibility toolkit report and EAL accessibility toolkit report. Please note, the reports still identify the ‘Tables ideally should not be missing headers’ error; however, this is due to the issue raised in MDL-75724 tracker.

Course #1: Grade 10 English (ENG2D)  ✅

The English ENG2D course is aligned with the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) curriculum, specifically designed for grade 10 students (ages 15 and 16). This course is implemented through a synchronous blended learning model that combines in-person classroom instruction with online components to enhance learning flexibility and engagement.

Learning Approach

Our course design emphasizes balanced integration of collaborative learning and self-regulated learning (SRL) techniques, detailed as follows:

  1. Collaborative Learning: is fostered by maintaining an active and clear presence with our learners using online forums, BigBlueButton sessions for live interactive discussions, and in-class activities. The course leverages Moodle's 'group' functionality to organize students into course sections and 'grouping' functionality for specific in-class project groups. This structured grouping establishes a robust sense of community and collaborative environment among learners.

  2. Self-Regulated Learning (SRL): is encouraged through clear completion requirements, activity restrictions, and competency-based progress tracking. The ENG2D curriculum competencies are embedded into the course, with corresponding resources and activities mapped to these competencies. This approach empowers students to take control of their learning journey, providing them with the flexibility to advance at their own pace while ensuring they meet the educational standards.
Course Design and Resource Utilization

The Everon team employs a meticulous strategy to select Moodle resources and activities that cater to the specific needs of each learning activity while maintaining a diverse range of engagements to keep learners interested. Our strategy is focused on three key areas, outlined below:

  1. Delivering content:
    • Folder - 1 instance
    • Book - 1 instance
    • SCORM - 13 instances

  2. Involving learners:
    • Feedback - 2 instances
    • Forum - 13 instances
    • Wiki - 1 instance

  3. Assessing learners:
    • Assignment - 19 instances
    • Quiz - 4 instances
    • H5P - 3 instances
Motivation and Engagement

This course utilizes two key strategies to motivate learners and enhance their engagement:

  1. Course Completion certificate: Awarded upon successful completion of the course.

  2. XL Level Up block: Incorporates gamification elements into the course to make the learning experience more interactive and motivating.
Learning Analytics and Reporting

Effective learning progress monitoring and data analysis are crucial components of our course management:

  1. Course Reports: Utilized for standard tracking and assessments.

  2. Learning Analytics Dashboard plugin: Provides advanced insights and analytics on learner performance and engagement.

  3. Ad Hoc Contributed Reports plugin: Upon request, the Everon team creates custom SQL queries to address specific data needs and provide detailed, tailored reports.

Course #2: Grade 5 English as an Additional Language (EAL)  ✅

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) course follows the curriculum created by Novalearn, specifically designed for grade 5 students (i.e., 10 and 11 year olds). The course is designed based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This course is implemented through a synchronous blended learning model that combines in-person classroom instruction with online components to enhance learning flexibility and engagement.

    • H5P Interactive Videos - 90 instances

  2. Assessing learners:
    • H5P Question Set - 70 instances
    • Assignment - 18 instances
Motivation and Engagement

This course utilizes one key strategy to motivate learners and enhance their engagement:

  1. Gamification: this course uses of H5P Game Map activities set up using rules that will determine what stage the student is allowed to move to and user lives that can be lost or gained accordingly, which results in a game-like experience that appeals to learners of this age group.
